5 Reasons You Should Use a Standing Desk

  1. A sit/stand desk gives you options.  To be able to choose between sitting and standing at different times of the day provides an emotional and physical boost to your work day. Standing for a while after lunch just may help keep you awake!

  2. A Standing Desk is better for your back.  Many people, while sitting at a desk hour after hour, even with an ergonomic chair, will eventually slump the shoulders forward and curve the back into a C position.  Our spine is designed to have an S-curve when we are standing, transferring the weight of our bodies through the four load bearing joints (shoulders, hips, knees and ankles) and engaging the large muscle groups.  The problems begin when our bodies are habitually imbalanced and secondary muscles begin to compensate for the work that the primary muscles and joints are designed to do, resulting in misalignment, aches and pains, particularly in the back, shoulders and neck.

  3. A Standing Desk is better for your neck. Do you regularly experience a tight neck and shoulders, or even headaches while working at your computer?  The typical sitting position at a desk has the head bent slightly forward,  putting abnormal strain on the muscles of the neck and shoulders, especially the trapezius muscle.  Imagine the difference of holding a 10 pound weight directly over your head ( the load is transferred through the bones and joints of the trunk of the body) as opposed to cantilevered straight out in front of your body. Standing alleviates much of that strain .

  4. Good posture means better health.  At a standing desk, uniquely raised just to the right height so that your elbows can rest easily on the writing surface enhances good posture - head is up,  shoulders are relaxed, and the back has its natural S-curve, transferring the load through its appropriate path. The effect of compromised posture is cumulative over time.  It may not be perceptible in the moment,  but over time poor posture results in stooped shoulders, an uneven gait, lack of balance, decreased oxygen supply and weakened muscles that can lead to more serious health issues.

  5. And lastly, movement is essential to life.  We are an increasingly sedentary society.  The reality is that even after 8 hours of sitting at a computer, most people sit some more during a long commute home and even more in front of the television.  There are so many things we can do to add movement and beauty to our lives – walk the dog, plant a garden, play frisbee with the kids, and since work is inevitable, get a standing desk.
